Cooking for lazy students

It's nearly 3 months into the university term and i'm not sure about you, but i don't even want to look at  another packet of super-noodles or spend any more of my student loan on a Dominos pizza...

So what is quick, easy and tasty that you can cook whilst living on a tight budget? Well, that's where i am here to guide you. I started university at Southampton solent in September of this year and had absolutely no idea just how difficult it is to think of, and prepare 3 meals a day. For the first month or so i was living off of pasta, bread, soup and noodles - not great seeing as though they are all carbs! So i finally decided to step away from carb city and enter the world of real, but easy cooking!

Step 1 - Grab yourself a student cookbook!

Many of them include recipes that you'll never use, or for that matter have never heard of. But many of them use basic, cheap ingredients that are easy to prepare and quick to make.

I went online and purchased 'The Student Cookbook', by Gina Steer which has been a life-saver and a time saver, especially as it explains everything step-by-step and provides the quantity you'll need of each ingredient for either 1, 2, 3 or 4 people!

Step 2 - Get shopping!

Make a list of the recipes that you want to try and write down a list of foods that you will need to buy to make them. This is a good way of ensuring that you only buy the things that you need and don't waste money on products that will sit in the back of the cupboard or fridge until they eventually go moldy!

Step 3 - Start making!

Experiment with your food. Involve your flatmates and ask them if they want to chip in on the shopping and share who cooks on certain days. This will not only mean you're spending less on food but it'll also help you to bond with your flat/house mates which is super important at university!

From experience there are many dishes that are so simple to make but packed with essential vitamins to help you concentrate whilst studying! Eating noodles and cheese toasties may sound appealing, but your brain can't function without fruit, vegetables, protein and fiber. Treat your body nicely whilst at uni, and i promise you, freshers flu will be a thing of the past.
